![]() ![]() It gives a stable base to all the small things. I then left the room while the smell dissipated. So I flat coated the model with the spray booth running (and the sub hanging out by about 3 feet or more). Only down side - it smells very strongly. It doesn't lighten the paint and if well shaken, gives a very nice matte finish. I have been using this for years on figure kits. I used Krylon Matte Finish out of a spray can. The masking was removed and I then wanted to get a flat coat on it to prevent marring. The bottom was highlighted with some other off-black shades to break up the color. While I was at it, I gloss coated the props in black and when dry, hit them with Alclad pale gold, which looks great for brass props. The bottom was shot with Floquil Engine black. I masked (and boy did I use a lot of tape). The lighter parts of the hull were painted and the Ocean Gray 5-0 was feathered into the area on the side. I painted the decks Floquil weathered black and then masked and shot the 5-L gray thinned with Model Master thinner. Keeping the CT off allowed me to paint it separately. These are pretty good starting points for color, but a little research showed the actual colors to be black topsides (a no-brainer), the lighter gray as Light Gray 5-L and the darker being Ocean Gray 5-O.īottom line, I ordered the correct White Ensign Model paints from Meteor Productions. ![]() This scheme calls for the bottom and decking and most things seen from above to be black, with the forward (upper) hull and conning tower listed as light gray (FS-36495) while from the CT back the hull changes to Light Ghost Gray (FS36375). WWII Fleet subs like this were painted US Navy measure 32/355-B and there are painting directions for this scheme on the back of the box. To model a specific sub, you need to not only get info on a particular boat but also a specific timeframe. One quick comment here - US fleet subs changed appearance constantly.Įvery time they were in port, things were reconfigured, new weapons and defensive systems added etc. The USS Silversides had different holes as shown in the picture. The most famous of which (in real life) is USS Wahoo.I chose the USS Flasher as the drainage holes look correct. Gato is a class of the US "fleet" type long-range recon submarines. Another way to verify if a game was compiled BASIC was to search for BASIC keywords and errors the string "RETURN without GOSUB" was found in GATO.EXE) Title So they had to be drawn as well as GET'd. The sprites were stored as a series of relative directions - up two pixels, left 7 pixels, draw filled circle at x,y, etc. Each sprite has to be on the screen and then GETed into a data array before it can be referenced as a sprite later on in the game. This is common in basic games that use PUT and GET commands for sprite manipulation. You can tell this because all of the sprites used in the game are flashed onto the screen in a rapid order before the game starts. GATO was written in basic and compiled to an executable. The DOS version features a Run Speed parameter which you can change to run the game at "0", or 8088 speed, "1", or Compaq Deskpro speed (80286), or "2.5" (PCAT and AT&T 8086). The highest difficulty levels of the game cause the opening mission briefing to be rendered *only* as Morse Code, forcing the player to decode it himself in real-time. The authors of the Mac version ( Bill Scott, James Rhodes and Sean Hill) used MacPaint to create all of the game graphics and MacDraw to generate the ship shapes. While the original GATO was written in BASIC for DOS computers, the Macintosh version was written from scratch in C and designed from scratch to take advantage of the Macintosh user interface. Groups +Ī port to the 7800 system was evaluated by Atari, and several prototypes have been found, though they show only a series of still renditions of various screens in the game. The mission ends when the player has successfully eliminated all targets on the map. Be prepared to direct the damage control team to fix up the damaged submarine when under fire. When all hell breaks loose, a disclosed submarine is a sitting duck to Japanese guns. Be warned that although the player has the element of surprise of a submerged vessel, enemy ships will return fire. Gameplay consists of missions where the primary directive is to navigate the submarine to track and intercept (multiple) enemy warships (patrol boats, destroyers, etc.) on the randomly created map (which consists of randomly placed islands) and close in for the kill with torpedoes.Ĭombat itself consists of a direct visual of enemy ships (via periscope) and firing torpedoes at the correct angle to ultimately sink the ship. GATO is a real-time 3D submarine simulation game, where the player is a commander of a United States submarine in the Pacific Ocean during World War II against Japanese warships. ![]()
